As a Busy Dad with fitness goals, focus more on consistency than intensity
In order to be effective, workouts need to be super intense, right?
For busy dads with a lot of different priorities, probably not.
There are a few variables that, when you find the right balance, come together in the form of improved fitness.
These are:
Duration of the workout
Intensity of the workout
Frequency of workouts
There’s an interplay between all of these. Think of improved fitness as your body’s adaptation to frequently being nudged by an intensity or duration slightly higher than your current fitness. If the duration and intensity are too high too often, you’ll be less able to workout frequently. This leads to inconsistent training over the long haul. This lack of consistency means you’re less likely to reach your fitness goals.
To improve fitness, busy dads will get the most benefit by doing their workouts in a way that supports long-term consistency over short-term intensity.
Consistently “nudging” your fitness over the long-term is like the erosion that created the Grand Canyon one grain of sand at a time over many many years.
Too much intensity in your workouts is like trying to blast away rock quickly - while you get some results, what you’re left with is not very stable in the long run.
In practice, this means choosing shorter workouts in which you push yourself just enough at a level that allows you to do it again in your next workout. Remember, you’re just trying to “nudge” your fitness along little by little for the best long-term results.
You’re a Busy Fit Dad…You’ve got this!
